Let’s Work It Out: The Power of Exercise on your Work

Read Time: 2 minutes

Lower blood pressure, a healthier heart, stronger lungs and muscles, a more attractive physique. These are benefits we often think of when we consider the value of exercise. However, in recent years the mental benefits have become noticed. How can this impact your work?

The Mental Benefits of Exercise

Studies have shown that our mental power is directly linked to our physical regimen. Here are some of the benefits: improved concentration, sharper memory, faster learning, prolonged mental stamina, enhanced creativity, lower stress, and elevated mood.

A study was conducted by Leeds Metropolitan University which examined the influence of daytime exercise among office workers with access to a company gym. Over 200 employees at various companies self-reported their performance daily. Researchers observed fluctuations within individual employees comparing performance of days they exercised and days they didn’t. They found that when employees exercised, they reported managing their time more effectively, being more productive, having smoother interactions with colleagues, and going home more satisfied.

How to Incorporate it into your Day

Though we now know more of the mental benefits of exercise, many of us still view it as an option only if we had the time. Here are three ways to incorporate it into your daily routine.

Find a physical activity you like: If you don’t even like what you’re doing you are less likely to do that activity. Find a physical activity you look forward to doing. Studies have shown that the way we feel while exercising can influence the degree of benefits we experience.

Work out in a group: Working out with other people not only makes it more enjoyable, but it also holds you accountable. However, it should be noted we are more likely to stick with an exercise regimen when others are dependent on our participation.

Schedule it in: Schedule your workouts into your day like you schedule meetings, that way you can build your day around them and hold yourself accountable.

Summary

Exercise can be a great benefit for you physically, mentally, and in your work life. If you’d like to free up your time to concentrate on growing your small business, ask us how we can assist you with services that can give you a fresh perspective—and keep you focused firmly in the future.
